How to organize the house after moving

Updated: Oct 18, 2020

Finding boxes in the middle of your living room after moving can be very stressful. Nonetheless, you have to remember to remain calm and organise yourself to efficiently get rid of all the boxes as soon as possible. In this article, we’ll show you how to organise your home after moving so you can start enjoying your new place right away.

If you prefer to tidy up your new home by parts, the best way to start is to put all the boxes in one room and unpack one at a time in order to keep the contents in place. This way, even if it takes you months to get everything in order, the new home will no longer look like a war zone, with boxes scattered everywhere. We also want to give you a friendly reminder to clean all cabinets, shelves, racks and drawers before you start storing.

We have put together a guide that you can follow to help you with the organisation:

  • Each thing in its place: thoroughly analyse each space. You need to know exactly where you want to store each thing. For example, which bedding will go in which closet? What about the finest crockery, plastic pots and cups? In the kitchen, frequently used utensils should be placed within effortless reach. The same rule applies to the cabinets: you could place some dishes and cups in them to start off and then progressively add everything else. Although, before you do all that, remember to remove the dust from the cabinets and other surfaces, but also your cutlery and other items; they will probably need a bit of brushing after the moving.

  • Set priorities: When moving homes, it’s highly recommendable to make a list of all the rooms of the house in priority order. In our opinion, the bedrooms should be your top priority, as you need your bed to sleep at night and your clothes organised in the closets to get dressed n the morning. Logically, the kitchen is just as important, because it’s where you are going to cook all your meals; although you don’t need to mae it perfect at first, just useful enough to get you started throughout the first few weeks.

  • Eliminate the unnecessary: Good job! You’ve made it this far. Now is the time to say goodbye to the belongings that you no longer need or use. You may have done that already before moving, but now you have settled up in your new home and realise that you’ve kept things that they either don’t go with the new place or they aren’t really necessary. If that is your case, this is another great opportunity to donate or sell your items. Also, think about all the space you are going to gain!
